Dedicated secure file storage

As well as the shared and personal FTP areas, we also provide dedicated secure file storage for small teams of people inside and outside the company. Unlike the anonymous area, files here are kept permanently and can only be read by authorised users.

Definitions

A storage area is known as a 'project', and is identified by a short name, known as the 'project account'.

A project has managers, who are Logica staff, and control the list of internal and external members of the project. It also has members, who have access to the files.

When you create a project, using the administration page, it will have you as the manager and the only member. You can then add Logica staff as members or managers; other managers will have the same rights as you, including the right to remove you as a manager.

Any manager can also create subaccounts for external users. You can create one for each person, one for each company, or just one for all external users, depending on your requirements.

Access control

A common requirement is to create an external account for each company that is associated with the project, and to allow each of them to only modify files to their own areas. By default, each external subaccount will be given a directory of its own, to which it has write access; it will be able to read all the other project files.

Another common requirement is to allow a subaccount to only read or write its own area, but to have no access to other project files. This can be specified when the subaccount is created (as 'HTTP and FTP to own directory only').

By default, Logica project members can read and write all files belonging to the project.

For more complex circumstances, we support subgroups that allow subaccounts to be given different levels of access. You should ask before using this, however, as it may be inappropriate for what you are trying to do.

Accessing your files

From inside the company, or via SecuRemote, you can get at the files of your project via a fileshare. From your Start menu, choose 'Run...' and enter \\public.logica.com – you should be presented with a list of fileshares, and should pick the one with the project account name. So for a project fred you should enter \\public.logica.com\fred to connect to the fileshare.

From outside the company, or from a Unix server or a web browser, you can use FTP to get at your files. You must ensure you login as yourself, using your GROUPINFRA username and password. You will then find your project in the subdirectory 'projects'.

To reach your files via a web browser, put your GROUPINFRA username in the FTP URL before the @ sign as in: ftp://redferni@public.logica.com/projects/fred

External users cannot use the file share method, and must use FTP. In their case, they will have been issued an account or subaccount, e.g. barney, and will use a URL like ftp://barney@public.logica.com/

If you need an FTP client, we can recommend FileZilla (free) and SmartFTP (NB SmartFTP has a licence fee). We support FTP-TLS encryption if you use a modern client, such as SmartFTP, and a modern firewall that permits it.

We have noticed that Microsoft Internet Explorer 7 has problems performing authenticated FTP. If you have upgraded to MSIE7, we suggest you use SmartFTP or FileZilla for authenticated FTP.

If you have an external user who cannot perform FTP (if it is prohibited by their company security policy, for example), we can provide a web-based file browsing and upload mechanism - just ask.

Site removal

A site will be suspended and later removed once all its owners have left the company. Sites may also be suspended at any time by the service administrators if their content is believed to be inappropriate. Site owners may also suspend their own sites, which will cause them to be later deleted. Unused sites will be suspended after 6 months.
